Judge F Clark

I enjoyed the challenge of placing the awards at this club show
Having judged the club shows on numerous times over many years
I have been involved  with our breed. Over all  the best examples were good  and the winning white bantam cockerel  was my breed for the club champion, and for good measure it took the overall  Reserve champion in the show

Large
Only four penetrate black cockerels of average quality, the brown pullet was best large in so few competitors

Bantam
White cockerels the winner was the correct exhibition type including a fully furnished tail.
The second was very close but it was sappy probably having to much maze, you must stop this when as growers they are getting their final plumage .
The winning white pullet was reserve champion after heading a useful class
Black cockerels only three penned none of  which a good exhibition quality breed out of pullet breeding pens, To breed top quantity you must have a separate pen dedicated to these, picking the best from a pullet breeding penis not good enough to challenge for the top awards
Black pullets the prize winners were of good type, but a breeder of these for sixty years I was disappointed by the lack of top colour the correct beetle green? Again serous application is needed to correct this.
Brown cockerels only one penned correct for type and colour. Pullets some of the correct colour, but alas we are still getting poor head pieces, this has prevailed for years. I accept this colour must be the most  difficult  colour to bred. But it could be over come with time and serous effort over several breeding seasons, these second quality keep winning because there is is nothing better.
Blues, some of the prize winners were of good type and variable colour, remember this is only a made up colour, and to maintain this you must be prepared to introduce stronger colour genes from time to time
A.o.c only one pullet good type and sound colure.

Members/exhibitors may find some of my comments harsh, but the Leghorn is a showman’s breed and requires serious dedication to claim those top honours! It can be done As many of you know it requires double mating only that will bring success at the top, and to prove that I remember many years ago, a master breeder of white bantam pullets only wining three best in show on the same day( GO FOR IT!!!!)

I thought that you would be interested to know for your website / newsletters/ rolls of honour that the Best Light Breed Bantam overall at Peebles Championship Show held Sunday 27/2/11 was a white Leghorn female shown by J. McLachlan. The Best Light Breed Bantam was sponsored by Millers Town and Country.  Great to see such a lovely little white leghorn making it to championship row.

Country Live Harrogate 2010

I must firstly say thank you to our members for putting me forward to judge and hope I didn’t upset too many .
Chris who was a great help on the day stewarding and myself set off with great anticipation of what might be,  especially with the show being so close to the National .
I must say on arrival everything seemed to be very well organised .The hospitality with the lunches was excellent .The show hall for the poultry was rather disappointing not very well lit . The pens were very close together and it was open to the public while judging took place, which was a bit annoying when you were trying to stand back and take a look at the birds .
Leghorns shown was 5 Large and 29 Bantams which we were very disappointed with .Out of these birds for the time of year the quality  was also disappointing with quite a number badly presented . I only hope for the Leghorn breeders out there that we can improve on this next year.

Otley Spring Show 2009
Winners

The Show Champion was Ian & Chris Mills white leghorn female.

Reserve was Wilf Charnock with a brown female.

Wilf tells me that this bird is 3 years old and has been reserve twice, both at Otley, no mean feat for a 3 year old bird.

Ian Mill's Black cock.
These cock breeders are really going places!

The Blue of J Crowther another good bird, good type and well put down.

The Large was won by our secretary, Richard Grice, who was sunning himself in the Algarve , hope he brings something nice for his sister?

We also had a visitor from down-under Mr Neil Penny (who was the Australian president up till last year), who donated engraved goblets to the champion.
He also brought some sashes for one of our main shows at back end.
He teamed up with H Guthrie, our president, who judged them and seemed to be really enjoying himself - he really mucked in!

It was just a shame that time was against him as I know he would have liked to have stayed longer, as it was, we did have a few laughs but would have liked to have discussed some of the finer points with him, perhaps next time Neil?
The show went well, pity the weather was not so good, but it did brighten up later on, but at that time of year its very hard to keep birds fit as most are in the breeding pens - so hats off to those who managed to put birds in pens that still had quality about them.
